Series two of the Logie nominated TV show, starring Rodger Corser, is expected to air around August, but before that residents will be able to spot the characters in Mudgee.
From Monday to Wednesday this week, the film crew and actors shot scenes at locations including; Mudgee Public School, town centre, airport and golf club.
The Mudgee Guardian caught up with producer of the Channel Nine hit, Ian Collie this week who described shooting in Mudgee as “easy”.
“A lot of TV dramas, we shoot in the city, and the city is an expensive place to shoot – for location fees and traffic control.
“Everyone here has been incredibly supportive and co-operative, and I suppose why not. It [Doctor Doctor] really shows off Mudgee and probably gives additional publicity for tourists,” he said.
Mr Collie revealed the TV show has just been released internationally.
“The show has been sold to the US and Germany and other places, but we had to change the name to ‘The Heart Guy’.
“We originally called the show ‘Doctor Doctor’ for the Doctor Doctor jokes, the Robert Palmer song ‘bad case of loving you (doctor doctor) and it was just an easy one to remember.
“But we also liked ‘The Heart Guy’ because it’s the affairs of his [Dr Hugh Knight] heart – and he’s got a good heart, but maybe a naughty heart.
If the show gets popular overseas, tourists will inevitably come here and ask ‘where’s that place, Whyhope?’
- Producer Ian Collie
“When we were going to sell the show overseas, there’s a show in Holland called Doctor Doctor and they took a trademark out.
The international audience base will ultimately showcase the region.
“If the show gets popular overseas, tourists will inevitably come here and ask ‘where’s that place, Whyhope?’.”
Mudgee was renamed the fictional town of Whyhope for the TV story line.
The crews are expected to return, two more times, before audiences can ‘spot Mudgee’ on the TV again.
