With top jockey Hugh Bowman riding, the three-year-old gelding led the entirety of the 1100m.
“This was his first city run really, he ran at Randwick the day the track was a heavy 10, but that was in a highway and restricted to country horses,” Crockett said. “So this was his first crack at city class.
“We had one of the best riders in the world on board, so everything went to plan, he summed it up in the first furlong.”
The only race Nictock didn’t win was that Randwick outing on a soggy track that he didn’t handle very well.
“After the highway I gave him four weeks and took him to Wellington, which was probably a bit below what he was capable of but he had 60.5kg and he ran a record,” he said.
“I wanted to give him confidence and myself confidence that he’d come through that run on the heavy track first up well enough to go back and be competitive. And when he went out there and ran a record I thought ‘you can’t do anything more than that’.”
Crockett will still need to discuss plans for Nictock – who turns four in September - with his owners but believes he’s still got some growing to do before he’ll need to go to the next level.
“I would be looking towards giving him a little bit of a let up, he’s still very immature, so if he had a break for a month and had a little bit more time to grow because he’s still a baby,” he said.
“So by the time he comes back and gets fit and ready to come back to town – another couple of months - the spring carnival horses will be going out when the city racing isn’t quite as strong and we’ll kick him off again.
“I just don’t think he’s quite mature enough to take on Saturday city racing because it is a big jump up from mid-week, but his benchmark is now at a level where he’ll have to go to a Saturday race. It’s all about timing and placement.”
The Crockett stable is enjoying a strong season and Cameron thanked his team.
