Besides the formal keynote addresses and workshops, the conference is an opportunity for principals to network and share ideas as to the best ways to lead teaching and learning in their schools.

Ninety-five principals, deputy and assistant principals attended over the two days, from as far away as Wanaaring near Bourke with most coming from Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst and Mudgee.

Among the keynote speakers was Secretary of the NSW Department of Education Mark Scott, who presented on the role of NSW schools in preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

He used examples of the last decade, with emphasis on smartphones and Facebook, and said “the biggest transport company has no cars and the biggest accommodation company owns no hotels”.

The challenge coming in preparing students for jobs that don’t exist today.

Another guest speaker was Layne Beachley, who presented a snapshot of her career, relaying stories of being towed into fifty feet waves. As well as the times when, faced with adversity, she overcame the obstacles that resulted in six world surfing titles. She tied her presentation to a framework of clarity of vision, taking risks when needed and getting a team around you to achieve your goals in life.

Dan Haeslar spoke on managing change in schools and ensuring a clear plan is in place to support the introduction of new ideas. He emphasised the importance of building a sense of belonging when undertaking change and provided some strategies to enable this to occur smoothly in the school environment.

Dr Louise Mahler focused on developing positive communication, providing insights into the vocal technique and body language of many well-known national and international leaders. Her workshop focused improving engagement when presenting to an audience and handling the occasional difficult situation.
