REMEMBRANCE Day poppies will be distributed for free in the Mudgee region after NSW RSL head office banned fundraising due to corruption woes.

Mudgee RSL sub-branch vice-president Jackie Perring said the club normally raises a few thousand dollars through selling the replica poppies for November 11.

Jackie admits the lack of fundraiser this year will hurt the club, “a little bit financially” but remains optimistic the issues will be resolved soon. The Bergin Inquiry and an investigation into state organisation by the Australia Charities and not-for-profits Commission is currently underway.

“We have just over 400 poppies to give away,” Jackie said. “They are a symbol, everyone knows what it means.”

The Mudgee service will start at 10.35am at Robertson Park.
