The ground record at Glen Willow has been smashed, sort of.
A bumper crowd of 9133 footy-starved Souths and Dragons fans streamed through the gates at Mudgee on Saturday for the 2018 Charity Shield to watch the Rabbitohs record a 22-18 victory over St George Illawarra.
The new high-water attendance mark eclipses the old previous best by one person.
That’s right, one.
The old mark, 9132 was set during the Parramatta and Gold Coast Titans NRL clash at Glen Willow in 2013.
Mudgee has a history of flooding its $14 million sporting complex for high profile sporting fixtures.
Mudgee hosted last year’s final City-Country clash, with 8322 people in attendance, while 6357 people were on hand to see the Waratahs and Brumbies face off in a Super Rugby trial, also last year.
Before that, 8631 people attended the 2012 City-Country to open Glen Willow.
Around the Central West, Bathurst’s Carrington Park has a ground record of 8872 set in 2001, while the full house sign was put up at Wade Park in 2008 for an NRL trial between Brisbane and Canberra.
Dubbo is believed to have the attendance record in the region, with 9627 people at the 2014 City-Country.
