After becoming a qualified doctor, Dr Street decided to specialise as a GP obstetrician, and recently she was named the 2019 GP Synergy Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine Registrar of the Year, at a ceremony in Dubbo. The annual award is presented to a GP registrar training in NSW or the ACT who demonstrates commitment to rural and remote general practice.
GP Synergy CEO, John Oldfield, congratulated Dr Street on her achievement.
Also making news:
"GPs like Dr Street, who in addition to their GP training gain additional specialised procedural skills like obstetrics or anaesthetics, are directly working towards better meeting the needs of rural communities," Mr Oldfield said.
"They play an important role in many smaller rural communities where hospitals do not have staff specialists, and procedural GPs service that healthcare gap,"
Dr Street is an advocate for living and working in Mudgee - having just marked two years in town - and has plans to stay after completing her training.
"I chose the ACRRM curriculum for my training because I wanted a specialty in which general practice is a core component, but not the only component," Dr Street said.
"I've loved obstetrics from the moment I did it as a medical student, it was the specialty in medicine that I gravitated most naturally towards,"
"As a GP obstetrician I can look after the ladies through their pregnancies, be there for the birth of their babies and then watch the babies grow up."
"By training in Mudgee I get the ultimate mix of medicine available and I think winning the award also says something about the amazing mentorship at Mudgee Medical Centre,"
Dr Street said the Hospital redevelopment (due to open in 2020) and the fact this is the second time a Mudgee doctor has won the award will only attract more doctors to the town.
I think that says something about the quality of doctors that Mudgee's attracting and the quality of training that's available here.

It's something we all have to look forward to. For what we call the next generation of doctors here in Mudgee - that's us young ones - all coming through. The older ones are looking to retire and have us take on over so we've had a lot more to do with the redevelopment and the planning and having a lot more say at what we want in the new hospital," Dr Street said.
"So we're excited to see a lot of those plans come. We're looking forward to having the CT room and the CT scanner and saving a lot of trips to Dubbo and a lot less travel for our patients,"
"I think it's very exciting that Mudgee has had two doctors now win the award so I think that says something about the quality of doctors that Mudgee's attracting and the quality of training that's available here."
