Burnie real estate agent Andrew de Bomford is one of Tasmania's leading auctioneers and now he is heading to Auckland to judge the Australasian Auctioneering Championships. Mr de Bomford, who is a selling agent for Harcourts, has competed in the national championships before but this time he will be judging how some of the best in Australia and New Zealand stack up. Two auctioneers from every state and territory and two from New Zealand are able to compete. However. there are no Tasmanians competing in 2023 and Mr de Bomford wants that to change next year. Mr de Bomford said there were some good young auctioneers in the industry right now in Tasmania along with some good female auctioneers. "Competing at this top level can be pretty daunting," Mr de Bomford said. "The auctioneers will be judged on initial impressions, standard of dress, how they handle the property contract, the description of the property and how they close the deal." Property auctions not as popular in Tasmania as some states but Mr de Bomford said that with some properties it was a "no brainer" to hold an auction. "I don't do that many auctions, about 10-20 a year, but I do more than most in Tasmania," he said. "Some of those competing in the championships would hold 1000 auctions a year." There is one female auctioneer competing this year. There will be a draw on October 17 to see who competes in what order.
