MWRC Ranger Chris Burns said that locals might not be aware that they’ve moved to the new location when they look to drop in.
“Since we’ve been open out here we’ve only had one customer whereas in the previous pound we would get about a dozen a week,” he said.
Mr Burns said appointments to visit the pound can be made by calling Council office on 6378 2850.
Animals that are picked up and being kept at the pound are photographed and posted on the MWRC website at http://www.midwestern.nsw.gov.au/Companion-Animals/Dogs-and-Cats/
The new pound has 14 kennels and two isolation kennels that can keep up to 25 animals comfortably at a time.
The old pound only had seven kennels, which at one stage had to house 22 dogs.
Avoiding the transfer of viruses is also made easier at the new pound with kennels being built with no gap at the bottom meaning there is no run-off when one is being hosed out.
Fireworks no fun for pets
The fireworks at Mudgee’s Carols in the Park on Saturday led to pets being picked up wandering local streets after being scared by the noise.
Mid-Western Regional Council Ranger Chris Burns said that a number of animals have been found and turned into the pound after Saturday night.
“On Monday we returned five dogs to their owners and when they picked them up they all said that it was because of the fireworks,” he said.
With New Year’s Eve and Australia Day still on the way in the coming month there are more fireworks to come in the local region.
Mr Burns said that pet owners need to be aware of the situations that may spook their animals and take precautions to avoid losing them.
“If you know that there’s going to be fireworks or a thunderstorm lock animals up in the laundry or chain them up to keep them from running away,” he said.
Locals are also being reminded to microchip their pets and update their contact details when they move.
MWRC offers microchipping services, which make reuniting lost pets with their owners much easier.
