Since the inaugural Art Unlimited event in 2008, a set of the giant pencils has been constructed and installed each year in the park along Dunedoo’s main street by Dunedoo Lions Club, as a sign of Dunedoo’s association with innovation in the arts.
After each year’s event, the pencils have been taken down, before being remade and erected again the following year.
This year, the larger-than-life pencil set found a permanent home on the corner of the Dunedoo golf course, to promote the event to visitors all year round.
The pencils of previous years have been carved out of black cypress pine and had their coloured tips painted, but the permanent pencils have been cut from ironbark by Dunedoo wood supplier Jim Webb and fitted with coloured metal tips by builder John Kubowicz.
Lions Club members erected them on a site provided by Dunedoo Sports Club.
The pencils are paired with two signs announcing the dates for this year’s exhibition, which will fall on May 24, 25 and 26, 2013.
Exhibition organisers said the decision to make a permanent work for the entrance to town was taken to reinforce the important role of Art Unlimited in elevating Dunedoo’s image.
Art Unlimited 2013 will open at Dunedoo Central School on Friday May 24 with a preview reception, and continue over the weekend of 25 and 26 May.
More than 500 entries are expected across the competition’s three categories of Hanging Art, Photography and Ceramics. Entrants will compete for total prize money of $11,000.
Artists have just one week to return their entry forms by the closing date of Friday April 26, and artworks themselves are due in Dunedoo on May 18 and 19.
