Mudgee District Rifle Association hosts its 92nd Easter Open this weekend where more than 50 shooters will battle for respective honours.
Most important will be the battle for overall winner and a right to be chaired to the presentation ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
The special tradition adds to a competition steeped in history. It began in 1911 and only missed both World Wars and a period during the 1920s.
“It’s a strong competition and these are skilled marksmen who set a high standard”
Mudgee District Rifle Association secretary, Jerome Blattman, said participants from the local club and across the state will compete over the two days.
“Some of the local competitors to watch out for will be Leigh Milton, Bob Hollow, Frank Stapleton and Paul Baskerville,” Blattman said.
It is unclear whether 2013 and two-time champion Mark Thurtell (Orange Rifle Club) will return to defend his title. However Blattman said as of Wednesday there were shooters, including past champions, already camping on the Mudgee Rifle Range.
“I know last year’s B-grade winner, Matt Shepherd from the Endeavour club is already here with his family,” Blattman said.
The competition will start with three by 10-shot matches at 500 yards on Saturday before moving to 600 yards on Sunday. There are shields for highest-scoring grand aggregates in Target Rifle and F-class irrespective of grade. Trophies will also be handed to highest scoring lady, veteran and tyro shooters.
Blattman said weather forecasts suggested great weather and the only complication will be wind direction and speed.
“It’s a strong competition and these are skilled marksmen who set a high standard,” he said.
Shooting begins on both days from 8.30am at the Mudgee Rifle Range.
