Celebrating your 21st is a big thing in your life and Gulgong trainer Percy Thompson was left partying on Saturday after his veteran galloper Star Of Universe picked up win number 21 of his career.
Lining up for start number 180 at Moree, Star Of Universe ran down his field of six gallopers to claim the Geoff O’Hara Electrical Benchmark 49 Handicap (1600m).
It was the “war horse’s’ third win this year and takes his career prizemoney to $155,445.
There are about four horses aged about 13 who are still running on NSW race tracks.
But Thompson believes his galloper is the only one that is still winning.
“People ask me ‘when are you going to retire him?’ and I say ‘why would I retire him when he is still winning’,” Thompson said.
Carrying 58 kilograms - four more than every other entrant - Star Of Universe was able to win by a length in a time of one minute and 36.47 seconds.
“He is a naughty bugger,” Thompson said of Star Of Universe.
“He will bite you and kick you but when a jockey jumps on him and he is behind the gate, he is ready to go.”
Thompson is tossing up his options but hasn’t ruled out nominating Star Of Universe for a race on Gooree Cup day in Mudgee on Sunday, May 4.
