Hosted by the Portland District Motor Sports Club, the meeting was dedicated to the memory of the late Daphne Blackley, wife of three-decade club president Ray.
The series production class saw some tremendous dices with two different heat winners in Kevin Spencer of Mudgee, who won heat one driving his sideways Torana, and Kevin Sawdy of Portland won heats two and three in his Commodore but Phil Noy of Bathurst was just too good in his Ford Telstar taking out the feature race from Spencer and Blayney’s Scott Bradley.
Bradley had his first outing in the Falcon since graduating from the junior ranks while more great drives came from Mudgee’s Chris Warnock, Patrick Parker of Orange and Bruce Bradley of Blayney all driving Ford Falcons while Oberon’s Peter Simmons only managed to get one heat of racing until his Commodore died.
Sue Healey dominated the four cylinder Sedans to win all three heats and take victory in the 10-lap feature in her Honda chased by Orange driver Travis Spicer who posted four second places in his Laser.
The street stock class was yet again the stand-out racing category with David Giffin of Sydney returning to do battle with the Blackley family of Andrew, Martin, Kevin and Jodie.
Giffin posted two heat victories with Martin Blackley claiming the other in Commodores while Kevin Blackley won the 10-lap feature in his Falcon from youngest son Andrew and Giffin.
Shanyn Duggan and debutant Natasha Spicer contested the junior class with Duggan of Portland winning in her Honda.
Brett Finucane drove like a man possessed to claim all three heats and the feature of the quarter midgets chased by Brett Muller, Rob Stephenson and Rachal Holt.
The go karts outlaws/125cc class was dominated by newly crowned Australian champion Ayden Elliott who won the feature and a heat while Jamie Dicker won the other two heats.
Strong drives also came from Rickie Dicker, Gavin Lamb, Nathan Jones, Troy Smith and Peter Ellis.
Matt Roberts dominated the vintage supermodified racing in old sprintcar from the Tognotti’s driven by John Edmonds, Michael Gray, Tony Ward and Kelly Roberts.
Another blast from the past came from the vintage speedcars Jose Sanchez taking the feature in the ex-Laurie Mathews VW from Ray Shilling in the ex-Terry Holland Special and Phil Powell at the wheel of the ex-Peter Bowland Daimler.
The 2014-15 speedway season continues at the Cullen Bullen Raceway on Saturday, October 25, commencing at 4pm.
