Shane Cox wrapped up the all powers category at the final race of the Mudgee and Districts Motorcycle Club season but it was Matt Keipert who had the last laugh.
Cox and Keipert were the top two contenders for the all powers title heading into the seventh and final round of the club championship.
Cox just had to finish in the top 10 to claim the title, which he managed to do, finishing second to Keipert.
It wasn’t the only win for Keipert on Saturday as he claimed the senior A-grade open race and the special shootout event, which saw an early end due to Jeff Dray’s horrific crash.
But what made Keipert smile even more was the fact he had beaten good mates Jason Hackett, Jason Redding and Dray.
“There was a lot of talk before the day, particularly from Jeffro [Dray] and Hackett, about how they were going to take me out,” Keipert said about the friendly banter between the mates.
“Obviously they felt threatened by me and they had to resort to those tactics because they knew I had too much speed for them.”
Keipert said he “put” Hackett into the tyres during one of the races but had nothing to do with Dray’s accident.
“Nah, he did it all on his own,” Keipert said.
Dray shattered his hip and was air-lifted to Westmead Hospital where he had surgery to insert a metal hip. He is still recovering in hospital.
“There is a common quote Jeffro and Red Dog [Redding] say and that is ‘you’re only as good as your last race’. So Jeffro and Red Dog, you’re only as good as your last race,” Keipert said with his tongue firmly placed in his cheek.
Keipert won the shootout from Hackett and Cox when it was stopped with five riders remaining because of Dray’s accident.
Dray did finish third in the all powers race behind Keipert and Cox, while Redding finished behind the two in the senior A-grade open.
The amateur all powers race was won by Ben Gander from championship winner Gareth Duddy and Luke Power.
Gander also won the senior B-grade open race and Duddy won the senior B-grade lites.
Sharni Channing took home the women’s race followed by Tamara English and Christina Cooper, and Redding claimed the over 35s race from Matt Dick and Joe Young.
Kailob Wilson won the senior clubman under 19s and senior A-grade lites double.
The junior rider of the month was Alix Dray.
Brunky King and Rhys Budd won the junior lites 15 years and 13-under 15s years races respectively.
Jackson Cunningham took out the 14-under 16 years 85cc and Ryhs Budd claimed the 12-under 14 years 85cc.
Kotari Henderson won two events – nine-under 12 years 85cc and 10-under 12 years 65cc.
Zane Harrington won the seven-10 years 65cc from Reese Harley and Tate Rowland, and Connor Richards took out the seven-under nines 50cc high powers from Billy-James King and Harper O’Brien.
