After winning their club’s fourball championship, Mudgee golfers Shelly Best and Abby Wilkins went on to place second at the Western district final at Narromine and qualify for the state championship.
On Monday the pair will travel to Bonville Golf Resort near Coffs Harbour to play at the state championships and Mudgee Ladies Golf Club vice captain Marcia Box said it was a big achievement.
“They will play among 31 teams, being 12 from the metropolitan area and 19 from country clubs,” Box said.
“They will play 36 holes over two days. There is a draw for the first day and then it’s seeded on the second day.”
Box said the pair finished second at Narromine by one shot on a countback after posting a round of plus eight. They will be joined at Bonville by Western winners and Parkes golfers Margaret Hogan and Frankie Cock.
“The Western area is the biggest district in golf so it’s a great achievement for the ladies,” Box said.
“They are going to be staying at the Bonville resort and I know they’ll love it.”
Box said the pair, in their 30s, represent a wave of younger ladies joining the Mudgee club in 2014.
“We have younger players like Shelly, Abby and Fleur Penman all coming on board and it is great to see,” she said.
“They will probably be playing older ladies with a lot more experience but I’m sure they’ll still give them a run for their money.”
Best and Wilkins have been drawn to play Pymble Golf Club’s Bernadette Aquilina and Jane Hannam in the first round on Wednesday, teeing off at 8.40am.
