Cameron Anderson Architects is nominated in the Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations & Additions) and Heritage categories of the awards for its design for the Mayne Street home.
The project added contemporary extensions to a heritage-listed dwelling to accommodate a growing young family.
“Using a careful composition and interplay of the contextual brickwork and sheet metal cladding, space was maximised, a new external dining space added, along with other enhancements, and the existing heritage fabric is left largely untouched and visible from the new spaces,” director Cameron Anderson said.
The builder for the project was Pirie Homes.
Cameron Anderson Architects has previously received awards for projects including the High Cube cafe in Mudgee.
“It’s good to have a focus away from the cities and to recognise what is happening in country towns and country areas,” Mr Anderson said.
NSW Country Division Chair, Sarah Aldridge, said the awards, now in their 52nd year, are an important way to showcase outstanding architecture outside the main city and metropolitan centres.
“Regional, rural and remote Australia is home to some of the best projects the architectural profession has to offer,’ Ms Aldridge said.
“Australia’s unique landscapes offer both challenges and opportunities to apply leading practice architectural design.
“Here in the country there is a sharp focus on sustainability, amenity with the local environment, and the very real benefits good architecture brings to the community.’
Mayne Street is one of 19 projects competing in seven award categories to be decided by a panel of expert judges from the industry.
A final category will be be decided by members of the public who can show their support for a local, or favourite, project by voting in the People’s Choice Award before 5pm on September 22.
