The contest against Orange City – who are playing for the final Blowes Clothing Cup finals spot – was called off early after an ugly brawl broke out.
The Lions were leading 47-5 when tensions bubbled over, with a handful of players from each side getting involved in the fracas.
Although there were no cards handed out for the incident, the fight did lead to both skippers agreeing to prematurely end the round 17 fixture.
“We sort of looked at each other and said that was enough. It certainly wasn’t something anyone wants to see on a rugby field,” Orange captain Logan Brockmann said.
While it remains unclear if there will be any sanctions handed down from the scuffle, the 42-point win is just another nail in the wooden spoon coffin of the senior Wombats’ season.
In the seconds, the Wombats were able to lift as the match was played out in full.
An upset victory over competition powerhouses Orange City was a great last home game for the gathered crowd, as Mudgee claimed the 26-5 win.
The Colts also had a close battle to open the day, leading 19-12 at half time.
The final score saw Orange City take the win however, as they came back in the second half to record a 29-26 win.
Orange skipper Brockmann labelled Saturday’s win over the Mudgee seniors as “scrappy”.
“It was scrappy, it was actually a little bit hard to get into the game at times,” he said.
“It’s never an easy trip over to the Burrow, you never really know what Mudgee will bring.”
Just one match remains for the Wombats, away from home to Bathurst CSU at University Oval in what could be a massive battle in the fight to avoid the bottom spot.
Although the Wombats firsts are sitting in last place on the ladder, a win over the CSU outfit could lift them off the bottom in a last-round escape of the cellar.
