Council to request feasibility study for clean coal electricity station | Poll

The motion was put before council at the August 16 meeting by Cr Percy Thompson, with Cr Thompson citing “rising electricity prices” and a majority of Newcastle’s coal production leaving Australian shores as reasons for the potential study.

He suggested that the hefty costs of electricity at the moment in the Mid-Western region meant residents were “unable to pay their bills, and are going cold”.

The motion to request the study was carried by council after Cr Thompson made his comments.

Cr Thompson recommended Ulan as an ideal place for the station if the study returned positive results, due to the fact there was previously an electricity station based there.

The council will now be submitting the request for the feasibility study to the State Government.
