The St Matthew’s Catholic School student is one of three finalists in the ‘School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year’ category, recognition for his resolute dedication to study in the classroom and his workplace, Let’s Meat in Mudgee.
Jonny is currently undertaking a Certificate III in Meat Processing (Retail Butcher) with TAFE NSW.
“When I found out I was a finalist I was utterly surprised. I am very honoured to be the regional winner but to go on and compete at the state award is very exciting,” he said.
“It felt amazing when I found out about being a finalist because doing my apprenticeship is something that I love, so to be rewarded for it, feels really special. Being a finalist gives me the opportunity to share my love for my trade with others and hopefully influence them to pursue careers through TAFE NSW in trades and courses that excite them.”
TAFE NSW Education Officer VET in Schools, Susan Hitchings, said that this recognition was very well deserved, describing Jonny as ‘the perfect student’.
“Jonny always gives his best at school, in his workplace and in his TAFE studies,” she said.
“From day one, Jonny impressed everyone with his commitment and maturity. He is an outstanding student and a wonderful ambassador for school based apprenticeship and traineeship programs.”
The NSW State Training Awards will be held in Sydney on Thursday, September 7. Winners on the evening will then progress to the Australian Training Awards, which will be decided in November.
