I am excited to see what fresh ideas are brought to the table in Round Three. The focus will be on projects that increase older people’s participation in artistic, cultural, sport and exercise activities. Applicants will be assessed on innovation, and the potential to create sustainable long-term solutions to issues facing older people.
Applications for the program are open to non-government organisations, local councils, universities and small businesses. When we do everything possible to remove physical and mental barriers for older people, it ensures they can fully participate in local life and everyone in the community benefits. Applications close November 20. For more information call (02) 8879 9172 or visit www.facs.nsw.gov.au.
COMMUNITY LANGUAGE CLASSES
Community-run language classes in Sinhalese will share in more than $4.5 million in funding from the NSW Government. The Community Language Schools Program provides funding to community organisations to help establish and run language schools in the local area. Classes are run for school age children with non-English speaking backgrounds to maintain their heritage languages. Sinhalese Cultural Forum of NSW Australia which runs classes at Dubbo South Public School will receive $1,000 in funding to support the operation of its Sinhalese Education Workshop in 2017.
Community language schools play an important role in helping young people maintain strong links to their heritage and cultural identity. I’m proud to support our community language schools and the work of their dedicated volunteers. Our community’s diversity is one of our great treasures, and this is one way the NSW Government can help in fostering and celebrating that diversity.
BIG SAVINGS ON ENERGY BILLS
Residents and small businesses from Lue to Trangie and everywhere in between could receive hundreds of dollars in savings on their energy bills under the NSW Government’s energy package savings scheme, Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said today. There is not a single fix but this package will help ease some of the pressure on local households, businesses and families. The NSW Government is doing everything it can to support families and small businesses to save on their power bills.
Reforms announced include: A 20 per cent increase on energy rebates which will see the Low Income Household rebate increased from $235 to $285 and the Family Energy Rebate increased from $150 to $180, discounts on equipment upgrades for small businesses, to save each business up to $1900 on their yearly bill, discounts for households replacing energy efficient fixed appliances such as lighting and air conditioners, which could lead to bill savings of up to $500 per household a year.
Discounts for up to 23,000 concession cardholders to save up to 50 per cent on the cost of upgrading old fridges and TVs to energy saving models, saving each household an average of around $200 a year, an end to unnecessary charges from retailers such as fees for paper bill, penalties for retailers who don’t move rebate recipients to a better deal, energy saving upgrades for up to 16,500 public housing clients to assist the state’s most vulnerable, with participating households to save an average of around $360 per year on their bills.
Til Next week, Troy.
