State Member for Dubbo Troy Grant announced on Tuesday that its 14 single rooms would each have a “carer’s zone”.
He said a carer’s zone would feature a couch with in-built storage that converted into a single bed at night. Its occupant will be provided with linen and be able to use bathroom and kitchenette facilities in the unit.
Hospital general manager Debbie Bickerton said family support after surgery gave patients a “better chance of recovering sooner”.
The surgical inpatient unit is being built on top of the maternity unit at the hospital’s clinical services building.
It will have 34 beds in single and double rooms, up 10 beds on the hospital’s current surgical inpatient unit.
The unit may accept its first patients in April next year.
