The $450,000 project was jointly funded through the NSW State Government’s Active Transport (Walking and Cycling) Program.
“The government is committed to working with councils to make walking and cycling a more convenient, safer and enjoyable transport option that benefits everyone,” Mr Grant said.
The Holyoake Footbridge is the final link in a pedestrian/cyclist loop from Lawson Park in the Mudgee CBD to Glen Willow sports precinct.
Council’s General Manager Brad Cam said the 2.6 metre wide footbridge will provide a safer and faster alternative for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river at Ulan Road.
“The community had identified the safety risk posed by the existing footpath along the existing traffic bridge and we’re pleased the State Government recognised a dedicated footbridge was necessary,” Mr Cam said.
“We’re excited to deliver this project along with the State Government.”
Reactions on social media were mixed, with members of the Mudgee Guardian Facebook page posting their thoughts.
This weekend’s Westfund Charity Shield will be the first major test of the bridge.
“With the Charity Shield on this weekend it’ll really get tested out and it’ll show its worth very quickly,” Mr Grant said.
The Holyoake Footbridge will be accessible for patrons attending the Westfund Charity Shield St George Illawarra v South Sydney Rabbitohs game at Glen Willow Stadium on Saturday, February 24.
