The team comprised of paddlers from four other Western Region Clubs, plus a couple of Illawarra members.
This was the first time the team had paddled together against teams that regularly trained together. The racing started at 8am and the Waratahs team needed all their strength and endurance training to compete against other teams from across Sydney and NSW. Although they did not get to the finals, the team had a fun and exciting day.
The following day, member Jen Consadine represented Mudgee MudDragons to complete in three races with the mixed crew in the All Cancer Category team, which comprised of paddlers from four other Western region clubs.
The squad only had 17 paddlers against other boats with the full 20 paddlers. They won the first heat and gained third place overall in the day’s competition. Credit and thanks goes to Pearl Butcher from Orange (coach and sweep) and the drummer, who was 83-years-old.
Dragon boating is for all ages (over 12) who like fun and adventure among a supportive team environment. All training and equipment are supplied and currently half price memberships apply.
Mudgee MudDragons currently train at Windamere Dam on Sunday mornings. For more information visit www.muddragons.com.au
