Matthew Ghossein, aged 43, of Perry Street, Mudgee, was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond for two counts of ‘Dishonestly obtain property by deception’.
The victim of the matter lost their debit card between the afternoon of March 15, 2018, and the next morning.
At 10.44am, on March 16, Ghossein used the card at a Mudgee store to buy the boxset of the Alien movies ($48.99) and put a $10 deposit towards lay buying a Married With Children boxset.
Then at 12.06pm he went to a local supermarket to use the card to buy donuts and a tin of Milo, costing a total of $14.
The stores’ CCTV capturing him using the Paywave function for the purchases.
Ghossein’s legal-aid solicitor, Steven Wright, told the court that the defendant “found the card” and the incidents featured “a complete lack of planning”.
Magistrate David Day said, “what he should’ve done, instead of going to Woolies or the DVD store, is gone next door there [to the police station] and turned the card in”.
