On Tuesday, October 9, blind Paralympian equestrian, Sue-Ellen Lovett, is riding into Mudgee as part of her 800km journey across Central Western NSW to ride against cancer and raise money for the new Western Cancer Centre in Dubbo.

The ride takes Sue through Central Western New South Wales, riding Off The Track Thoroughbreds who are just starting their new lives as a riding horses.
“One of the horses I will be riding is Vashka, an ex-racehorse who has been selected for his quiet and gentle nature and is currently undertaking training for his new life with Scott Brodie, who is the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Manager for Racing NSW. Scott is being assisted by guys he has trained to work with the ex-racehorses and these gentlemen are from the Homes For Heroes Program, a fantastic organisation that assists soldiers with PTSD integrate back into society and their life as a whole,” she said.
“I will have two sighted guides riding with me to ensure I stay on course and they too will be riding ex-racehorses.”
Sue-Ellen said she looks forward to the challenge of riding for 15 days which will take her from Dubbo to Geurie, Wellington, Goolma, Mudgee, Gulgong, Dunedoo, Coolah, Binnaway, Mendooran, Gilgandra, Collie, Warren, Trangie, Narromine and returning to Dubbo on October 21.
Sue-Ellen is no stranger to tough experiences, beginning when she was diagnosed with a hereditary eye disease at 12 years old that over time, left her totally blind.
Sue is also a cancer survivor and feels passionate about helping other patients in her community.
“I understand the difficulty of leaving home and family to travel long distances for cancer treatment. The new cancer centre in Dubbo will bring life-saving treatment much closer to home, which will have a really positive impact on patients and their families,” she said.
“Money raised for ‘The Challenge – Ride Against Cancer’ will go towards important support services at Wellness Space of the new cancer centre, such as yoga, beautician, education and nutrition classes.”
