When Mudgee went pink during October for the first time in 2016, it set the bar very high.
Since then it has spread Australia-wide with a number of towns and cities turning pink in the month of October to raise awareness for breast cancer and the McGrath Foundation.
Now in 2018, more businesses in the Mudgee region are getting on board than ever before with a fully-stacked month ahead for the region.
Speaking with the Mudgee Guardian, arguably the face of Pink Up Mudgee, Hugh Bateman shared how humbled he is by the sheer amount of support the movement continues to get in the region.
“We have just over 120 business registered to start the month off and that will surely explode in the next few days,” he said.
“Over the last two years that we’ve held Pink Up Mudgee, we haven’t had nearly that much to start with, it’s just wonderful,”
“It is also breast cancer awareness month nationally. Unfortunately there are 60 new cases diagnosed in Australia every day,”
“Not only that but it’s important we raise funds for breast care nurses who do a wonderful job. We have our own in Mudgee Diana Thomas who does a wonderful job and is an absolutely wonderful thing to have.”
It wouldn’t be a month of pink in Mudgee without a myriad of events to mark on your calendar.
There’s a Pink Elvis Night on a Kelly’s, pink bowls at Club Mudgee, a pink motocross event, raffles, competitions, flybys, winery events and so much more during October in the Mudgee region.
“People are doing all sorts of amazing things,” Hugh said.
“We’re inviting people to come along and put something up there, for a family member they may have lost or a friend we invite them to put a little card or decoration there for them.” Hugh said.
The wall of remembrance will be unveiled on Saturday, October 6 at 11am at St John’s Anglican Church on Market Street.
