Of all the ways Mudgee is turning pink in October, accountant Simon Byrnes’ is one of the more subtle expressions.
Doing something many people take for granted as part of their routine, Simon has painted the fingernails on his two pinky fingers pink for the month and is encouraging other to do the same, especially men in the community.
“I must have woken up on Monday and I just started thinking of pink up mudgee and I haven’t got an abundance of pink shirts or anything to wear so I thought to make a token contribution,” he said.
“Then as I was thinking of pink up mudgee somehow the words ‘pinky up mudgee’ seemed like a nice add-on to that. I thought surely I could find some pink nail polish make a contribution that way.”
“I guess though, yeah, to make people aware, it’s a token gesture and if I can round up a few of my mates together to lash out and get into the girlfriend’s supplies all the better.”
Some people are eager to see Simon go all the way, with one offering a tidy donation if Simone made the jump.
I’ve had an offer from someone willing to make a donation of $500 if I paint all my nails, so I might consider that.

“I’ve had an offer from someone willing to make a donation of $500 if I paint all my nails, so I might consider that. Toenails would be an easy one to hide,” he said.
“I think I was going to counter with a $500 donation not to paint them.”
While painting your pinkies might seem like a small gesture, Simon hopes others jump on board and says he knows how devastating a diagnosis can be for some people.
“We’ve all had some connection with cancer through families, friends and others,”
“I’m a friendly supporter of the breast cancer awareness and the McGrath Foundation.”
“I think it’s good for the community coming together and seeing all the businesses rally around is great to see.”
It’s time to #pinkyup fellas.
A wall of remembrance has been erected on the grounds of St John’s Anglican Church on Market Street as part of Pink Up Mudgee. The official opening is on Saturday.
