After a slow start to the competition, the Mudcrabs stormed home to qualify for the grand final.
Unfortunately, they came up against a red-hot Maitland Redbacks in the decider, losing 9-0.
The final was Mudgee’s eighth game for the weekend, which was made even harder by the team having 11 players and playing in conditions more suited for an actual mudcrab.
Mudgee grew in confidence and ability with every game.
Starting with a couple of close defeats followed by a draw with the top-of-the-table Central Coast and ending the preliminary round stages with two wins, saw Mudgee move to the semi-finals.
They defeated Newcastle 5-3 to set up their clash with the Redbacks.
“This is only a new team and they have proved to their opposition and themselves that they are a team to watch in the future,” Mudcrabs player Kerry Reynolds said.
“We will now concentrate on securing some more players, a coach and train hard for the upcoming State Cup in Port Macquarie in December.”
Mudgee’s mixed open side will be hoping for a better showing at next week’s Country Championships.
The mixed side were knocked out in the quarter finals by Maitland, 10-6.
