For the third year running Mudgee has turned pink to help raise awareness and much needed funds for Breast Cancer Awareness and the McGrath Foundation. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month with Mudgee the first town to ‘Pink Up’ in 2016.
In addition to raising awareness of breast cancer, the aim is to raise much needed funds for the McGrath Foundation that help place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia. There are currently 120 McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities throughout Australia, who assist individuals and families experiencing breast cancer by providing mental, emotional and physical support.
Over 67,000 families have been supported since 2005 with more nurses needed to meet the growing rate of breast cancer diagnosis in Australia. The McGrath Foundation has become one Australia’s most recognised and respected charities since Jane and Glenn McGrath’s very public experience with breast cancer.
Mudgee Pink Up Coordinator, Hugh Bateman, said that it was extremely gratifying to see a whole community in unity. “I think the success in Mudgee is that it’s an extremely generous community, with over 280 businesses, organisations, service groups and sporting groups were united for one purpose – McGrath Breast Care Nurses,” he said.
It’s just massive and this community gets behind all types of causes and organisations.

Hugh’s sentiments were echoed earlier this year when McGrath Foundation director, Tracy Bevan, was in Mudgee filming promotional material for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Mudgee as a community is showing the rest of Australia what can be done if we all pull together,” she said. “Because we’re doing it for families in the community that are affected by breast cancer”.
Pink Up Mudgee has seen a host of events take place including Pink Karaoke with the King, Pink Up Charity Golf Day and the Pink Up Bowls Day, however there are still a few that you can get involved in such as Ladies Night at Club Mudgee and the Pink Up Fishing Competition on November 2 and 3.
