The Bathurst native has stepped in once again to take lead of the Mudgee Wombats rugby club for the coming season.
First elected as president last year, Luke Humphreys had spent six years as a player, stepping in where needed.
“I’ve played anywhere from thirds to firsts,” Humphreys said.
“Normally it depends on injuries but I’ll fill a spot wherever it’s needed.”
Returning as president for the second time, Humphreys says although the job isn’t easy, he’s keen to have another term.
“It’s a tough job but it was no question that I would do it again,” he said.
“I’m happy about it, there’s no dramas.”
Humphreys took the reins from Greg Bartrim in 2017 who had a six year long series of terms as president.
He says the club has since found a groove that works with the current committee, and will be optimised with some new additions to the team for 2019.
“The committee is pretty settled which is great,” he said.
An addition to the committee is the role of a senior co-ordinator which will be filled by Patrick Butterworth and Helen Blackmore, a positive for women in rugby.
“Helen who is one of our female players has been elected into a position which is a first but I think it’s a good thing for women’s rugby,” Humphreys said.
I’m just the elected head, there’s a lot of people in our club that do a lot of hard work and that’s why it’s such a good club, because people want to help out behind the scenes.

When asked if there will be any changes, pres was certain nothing significant will be tweaked.
“We’re a pretty successful club as it sits so I don’t want to change too many things around,” he said.
“We might end up with a few extra teams depending on numbers, and the women’s comp is expanding which is great.
“There will be no changes in the way we operate.”
Following a successful an extremely successful season for the Wombats last year, Humphreys’ keen to see history repeat itself.
“This year we had every team in the under 13s and first grade go into the finals so it would be good to see something like that again,” he said.
