As a community, we play a vital role in standing up, speaking out and ending all forms of violence against women.
Michele Evans, chairperson of the Mid-Western People against Violence Committee, said we set the standard for acceptable behaviour.
“If we can teach children from a young age about respect, this will transpire through the ages,” Michele said. “If we can set the standard for respectful behaviour and gender equality in the community, at home and in the workplace, we can eliminate violence against women and children. We do this by standing up, speaking out and acting when it comes to violence against women.
“We are taking an active step to challenge the status quo, to treat everyone with equality and respect and we encourage others in our community to join us. “Together we can intervene and prevent violence against women and children in our community.”
The People against violence Committee are hosting the short film ‘JADE’ for White Ribbon Day at the Mudgee Town Hall Theatre. The film runs for 15 minutes and will be shown at three sessions at 10am, 12pm and 6.30pm.
Cost is a gold coin donation, funds raised go towards supporting White Ribbon’s national primary prevention campaign, which aims to stop violence before it occurs, through education initiatives in schools, workplaces and the broader community.
- Date change
From 2018 onwards, White Ribbon Day has moved from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to the Friday before November 25. So this year White Ribbon Day will be on Friday, November 23.
White Ribbon Australia’s reason for moving the day is to ensure that the work they do on White Ribbon Day has the greatest impact possible, and will also support the work of the international community on November 25 in their common goal.
“White Ribbon Day is the most important day of the year in our movement’s work,” the organisation said in announcing the move. “This isn’t changing, it’s a big day – but so is the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. So we’ve asked ourselves, why have two big days of action on the same day?”
