I would like to personally express my utter disappointment with the young jobseekers in the local region.
My place of employment have been advertising for a junior administration assistant, as a lot of people have probably seen for the last couple of months.
We are offering the opportunity for someone to gain a valuable qualification if they wish, whilst working in a great team environment.
Over the last month we have had two young people go through an interview, and be offered a paid trial period of two weeks.
Read more:
Two of these young people have raved about how much they enjoyed working here, only to suddenly not show up to work, and not even make a phone call prior to their start time to let us know they will not be in, but send an email, hours after they are meant to be here, and refuse to answer phone calls.
One even went so far of secretly organising a job interview with another employer on our premises, whilst asking us (via email again) to allow her to continue her trial.
What happened to young people being taught work ethics basics such as “always call if you can’t make it”, or to at least have the courtesy of letting the employer know if they have decided not to accept the position?
We have also had people apply for the job, obtain an interview, then fail to turn up at the appointed time, after citing in their resume that they were “on time and reliable; honest, trustworthy and punctual”.
In my time as an employment consultant in the area, I wondered why we have such a high unemployment rate among young people in Mudgee.
Now being on the other side of the desk, I completely get it - they simply have no idea.
To the young people of Mudgee:
Jobs are out there. Do the right thing by your employer, and perhaps brush up on employment etiquette.
Don’t blame Mudgee employers for not giving you a chance. Give yourself a chance by doing the right thing. It goes both ways.
