For some, it was a new job, for others it was a new car, and for the rest, well it was just a steady year. But for James Hughes, it was a hugely successful year in terms of Junior Rugby League.
The 2019 Mudgee Junior Rugby League secretary shed some light on the amazing run the club had this year.
“We had some really good highlights this year,” Hughes said.
The league tag girls made it to the under 18s grand final, and unfortunately went down to the Orange Hawks.
“They went down just to the Orange Hawks but they were valiant in defeat,” James said.
“To make the grand final, they did really well.”
Meanwhile, the under 12s gold team made the grand final, securing another undefeated year for the Dragons having claimed the premierships in 2016, 2017 and now 2018.
The under 13s went on to win their grand final, while the under 11s made it to the end but fell at the last leg.
“Overall it was a really good on-field season,” Hughes said,
This year marked the 50th anniversary for the Mudgee Dragons, and while the red and green outfit does suit this time of year, Hughes says the traditional red and white could bring some fire to the next season.
Only two of our teams didn’t make it to a final which obviously speaks volumes of how good our coaching staff were.

“I think we have a very good chance of going even better than 2018,” he said.
I think going back to the traditional red and white colours might add a bit more spark to the season.

The Mudgee Guardian asked James what he wants for Christmas, and honestly, you can’t disagree with his response.
“I’d love seven junior league premierships in 2019. Does Santa have that in his sack?,” he joked.
Every family has something that makes Christmas feel like Christmas, and for James, it’s the classic savoury item that gets him feeling all merry and bright.
“Christmas ham. If you don’t have ham, it’s not Christmas,” James said with certainty.
In case you are putting a beverage out for Santa on the 25th, make sure to check the list twice and offer his absolute favourite.
Apparently Santa is a VB drinker.
