During construction of the upcoming Mudgee Water Park in Lawson Park some time last week, several items were uncovered at the site during excavation that appeared to be bones, according to a tip received by the Mudgee Guardian.

The Mudgee Guardian queried council on what was found and we received the following response from a council spokesperson:

Council can confirm a number of small bones and crockery was found in Lawson Park during excavation works for the Mudgee Water Park last week.

Work was ceased immediately and an archaeologist inspected the items that were sent for testing and confirmed to be animal bones. 

The items have been found to have no historic significance and are likely remnants from an area that was possibly used as a dumping ground prior to 1890 when it became a Reserve for Public Recreation. 

Works have been approved to proceed on the site with instruction given to staff and contractors regarding further possible finds.

The park is due to be completed by the end of the 2018/19 swimming season and entry to the park will be part of the Mudgee pool entry fee.
