That’s why I do the Black Dog Ride.
For those who don’t know, the BDR is a now national ride where motorcyclists come together to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention with funds raised donated to programs or charities who deal with such illnesses.
I have participated for many years alongside my father who was the first person I knew to ever ride in the charity event.
He’s been all over the country raising awareness, including have ridden to South Australia, Victoria, Northern Territory as well as various state rides.
Since then, myself, my brother and family friends participate in the ride. Even my immediate family have been involved having held various fundraising barbeques over the years.
That's another thing, too. When you ride in a BDR everyone becomes like a family in a way.
You make friends with people who are there to do the same thing as you, and frankly, it's quite amazing.
This year will be my fourth year riding my motorcycle in the event that leaves from the Bathurst Sportsground and stops at Mudgee as part of the Bathurst Black Dog Ride One Dayer.
Why go to the effort? Well, because mental health is something everybody can relate to.
It’s so important for people to never feel alone in such a situation, and that’s why we ride.
It’s not a weakness. It’s more than ok to talk about it. You are not alone, we are here for you.
The Bathurst Black Dog Ride One Dayer will be held on March 17.
Don’t forget to give us a wave if you see us coming through town!
