Wade Hawley, aged 28, of Lawson Street, Mudgee, was sentenced to a six-month conditional release order.
On the morning of Tuesday, January 29, 2019, police went to Hawley's residence to discuss a large cannabis plant seen growing in his backyard.
He admitted to the accusation and agreed to take the officers to the location where they saw the 2-3m tall plant, which he told them he grew for his own use to "save money".
Hawley pleaded guilty to charges of possessing and cultivating a prohibited plant, when he represented himself in court.
Magistrate David Day refuted the defendant's idea of using the drug to treat depression, when he said "the pharmacological effect is that it's a depressant".
But on the issue of growing it he added, "there's some merit to that, even though it's illegal, but at least you're not supporting drug dealers - they're bad people".
