The National Trust of NSW has today announced the winners for its annual National Trust Heritage Awards, with 'Revive the Regent', now officially known as Revive The Regent Theatre Mudgee Inc., has been announced as the winner of the Advocacy category.

According to the National Trust, the award in the advocacy category is about 'recognising the extraordinary commitment of a community group and/or individual who have pursued the protection and conservation of key heritage places, items or objects.'
'Assessed by an independent panel of judges across 11 categories, award entries are received from the building design and architecture sector, community groups, the culture and arts sector including galleries and libraries, leading researchers and publishers, and many more.'
The groups creator, Simone Sheridan was the one to nominate the group for consideration and speaking with the Mudgee Guardian earlier in the month, Simone said if they won, it would feel like a vindication of all their work.
"To me honestly, just being shortlisted is a win, honesty I'm nervous being against some of the groups we're up against. I actually support two of them, I'm on their mailing lists [laughs] so if we don't win it'll be a graceful loss because I feel really proud to be amongst that company," Simone said.
"I guess I didn't realise our work was getting noticed so much. That to me that helps me - I live in Sydney but I travel to Newcastle a bit and people in both of these places are talking to me now about the Mudgee theatre,"
"It's definitely made me go 'wow, we're getting somewhere'. I certainly did not plan to be at this for two years and have an incorporated association now as a result. So it makes us feel like we are on track."
The awards night is part of the Australian Heritage Festival which runs from April 18 to May 19.
The Mudgee Regent Theatre was placed on a 'Interim Heritage Order' [IHO] in February which lasts for 12 months.
The IHO is sometimes put in place as a preventative measure which means that any development on the building has been frozen until such time as the assessment is completed by the Heritage Council of NSW.
