Every year, Riding for the Disabled Australia (RDA) holds the Musical Ride Competition. RDA groups from across Australia submit their performances in video form to be judged.
It was Mudgee RDA's first time entering the annual competition and to their surprise, they won first place with their performance inspired by the song 'This is me' from The World's Greatest Showman.
Secretary and Volunteer Coordinator of Mudgee RDA, Diane Burnicle said the win is a 'big tick in the box' for the group.
"We very much influenced by the song 'This is me' from The World's Greatest Showman, it's just a great song with a positive message, we really liked that. So we picked it and we just rehearsed and rehearsed the routine with the LifeSkills adult class," she said.
"We were just so pleased with how everything went, we put the call out on Facebook, looking for anyone that might be able to help with production and Young Nick Pearce put up his hand up and he came in and did all the video editing and we had a friend of a friend in radio that did the voiceover,"
"It all came together really well. We sent the video off back in August and to our surprise, we soon got an email back that said we got first place," "I would joke that if we didn't win it was rigged." she laughed.
Diane said none of it would have been possible without the help of their supporters.
"Everybody chipped in. Mum cut out the costumes and we had a working bee out at the farm who glued the fabric for the costumes and put it all together. We had some amazing horses that we lease through the Seven Smiles Academy, we really couldn't have done it without them and the volunteers that every week trudge through the dust at the arena."
Diane said the RDA is plans to enter the competition in 2020, this time with Mudgee Public School. RDA Mudgee will showcase the winning Musical Ride at their presentation night on the 28 November at Club Mudgee.
