After being nominated as the President of the Mudgee District Hockey Association (MDHA) in September 2018, Ryan Hislop hit the ground running with his committee to shape and set hockey up for a bright future in the region.
With surrounding regions such as Lithgow, Orange and Bathurst seeing hockey as one of their largest sports, Ryan has been driven and motivated to see the game in Mudgee grow and develop into a base for local players to enjoy and excel in the sport.
Despite difficulties with attaining appropriate fields for high level competition, this has not stopped Ryan from growing the number of members of the association and seeing the quality of competition increase over the 2019 season. Through strategic decisions such as affiliating with Hockey NSW, having regular development and coaching through state and national level coaches, Mudgee hockey is maturing into an association that has the potential to reshape the sport in this region.
Several times through 2019, this partnership allowed for international umpires and players to visit the region, spending time coaching several hundred players for the day.
A highlight of which saw Hockeyroo Kate Hanna and International Umpire Zeke Newman spend time with junior hockey players and senior hockey players respectively.
Ryan Hislop deserves great credit for daring to challenge the status quo, with the hope that the association will be able to see more players and family being involved in this great sport.
