Looking back at the success of the competitors of Mudgee Martial Arts over the years, it's not hard to find a constant figure in amongst the excitement and action: Geoff Spice.
Geoff has been a mentor and coach to me for most of my life, teaching and guiding me to develop into the martial artist I am today. Geoff himself is a well respected martial artist, having competed at the highest levels of the sport, with much success yet always remaining humble.
Competition is nerve wracking at times, and he is the person I always turn to for advice, an inspirational pep talk or reassurance after a loss.
Geoff hasn't just been a mentor in the Dojo, he's been a teacher in life. He taught me to be courageous in the face of adversity, and always give it my all with whatever I do.
He taught me patience, and to be confident in my abilities and in myself. But above all else, he taught me resilience, teaching me to bounce back from losses with humility and a desire to do better the next time around, forever reciting his catchphrase that any of his many students are familiar with: "I can."
