Mid-Western Regional Council general manager, Brad Cam, said that the project will convert a current hangar into a space to better accommodate people who may be seriously injured or ill as well as their families.
"It is wonderful that the new facility will provide a space for patients and personnel to wait in privacy, protected from the elements," Mr Cam said.
"Seriously ill patients, family members and paramedics waiting to board an air ambulance have previously had to wait inside an ambulance in the airport carpark."
Furthermore, the facility is also expected to be able to support firefighting personnel and other emergency response staff accessing the airport.
Mr Cam said that funding for the development came from the NSW Government ClubGrants Infrastructure Grants program, which was then matched by Council.
The Clubgrants Fund, reinvests a contribution from the state's registered clubs gaming machine profits into such projects. The March 2020 round prioritise bushfire affected communities.
"Council has secured $39,500 in grant funding through the NSW Government to transform an existing hangar at Mudgee Airport into a dedicated ambulance waiting bay," Mr Cam said.
"Council has matched grant funding for the development of the $79,000 project which is expected to be completed in December."
