Following the announcement, the Mudgee Guardian reached out to Wesfarmers to clarify if Mudgee would be getting a smaller Kmart, similar to the Target Country Mudgee already has.
"We can confirm this store will be converting to a small format Kmart store - which we are calling Kmart hubs - in early 2021," the spokesperson wrote.
Local interest
Nearly 700 residents responded to a Mudgee Guardian poll in 2015 about how much interested there was in a Kmart coming to Mudgee, just under 60 per cent said it would 'change their life' if Kmart came to Mudgee.
Now that dream is reality, with Mudgee's Target Country being earmarked for a conversion to Kmart according to a listing on Target's website.
Regional Target stores fare the worst of the the 284-store network under changes the business' owner Wesfarmer has outlined.
The company says it will convert 10 to 40 Target stores and 52 Country Target stores in regional areas to Kmart stores. It will also close 10 to 25 large format stores and 50 small format Target Country stores.
In all, between 122 and 167 locations will either be converted or shut, accompanied by a significant reduction in Target's store support office.
"We understand these closures will affect a lot of people in the Target community and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times," Target said in a message to customers.
"We are committed to providing every opportunity for redeployment for our team members who will be affected by these changes.
"We are proud to have a rich history as an Australian company and we are committed to serving you, our valued customers, now and into the future. "
The changes to Target stores will mostly happen in 2021.
