Thompson Racing's two-year-old 'legend', Kookabaa is looking to be a real chance in The $1.3 million Kosciuszko, but is relying on ticket holders to seal the deal.
The $5 sweepstake tickets for The Kosciuszko have been up for grabs since July 1, and Thompson Racing are hoping someone will give their contender a chance.
"You need a good horse to run in The Kosciuszko, you need to be winning in the Sydney races to be good enough to compete in that race because they're really strong horses you're against," Ben Thompson of Thompson Racing said.
Crossing the line first in the Exceedance @ Vinery Handicap (1100 metres) on August 5 at Canterbury, Thompson thinks Kookabaa has done enough but the team are weighing up the risk of running him again before the tickets are drawn.
"We definitely think he's done enough now to get picked," Ben said.
"We have to decide whether we run him again before the tickets are drawn because he's done the job now so if he goes out and runs and doesn't go good, they might not pick him up.
"You want him to run at least in the top three again.
"While he's winning you might as well keep winning, you don't want to back off too much."
Since the two-year-old has occupied a slot at the Thompson stables, Ben believes they've found the key to keeping him winning and is reason why Kookabaa would be a wise pick.
"He's a horse that's winning and a horse that's on the up. Since he came to us, we've found the key with him and just got him winning. We don't really know where he's going to stop, he seems to be doing enough all the time to win, he's improving and a trier," Ben said.
He's just a legend. Everything he does, he's just a professional and that's why he's so good - he knows his job and just goes out there and does it.

"He's a versatile horse, that's the type of horse you want in a big race. If there's no speed in the race, he can put the speed there, and if there's a lot of speed he can sit behind them and finish over the top of them.
"But, if we don't end up getting a run in The Kosciuszko, I think the horse will go on and win races anyway."
For Kookabaa to be named in one of the 14 available slots, "it would mean the world to us".
"We work every day of the year, horses don't stop and we've been doing it for over 10 years as a team - me, my dad and my brother," Ben said.
"We've been doing it for a long time and to have a horse in a massive race like that on a massive day would mean the world to us, really."
The ticket holders will make their pick on September 9.
Tickets can be purchased from the TAB app or from a local TAB outlet, but must be registered online.
