On Friday the rugby union community paid him back as best it could, with a guard of honour after a small, private funeral.
Coronavirus restrictions limited how many people could attend the service, but Orange Emus, Orange City and the Central West Rugby Union fraternity came together as a mark of respect, with 30-odd people making a guard of honour for his coffin and again for the hearse.
The service was held at St Joseph's on Friday for family and friends, with a potential public memorial to come depending on coronavirus restrictions.
Mr Veenstra died over the weekend after a long battle with illness.
He serves as CEO of the CWRU for 31 years and was intimately tied into the fabric of Central West rugby.
