That's what the Mudgee Public School softball team has realised, after they nervously made the trip to Orange for the softball knockout competition, where they kept their expectations low.
None of the boys had played softball before, and faced off against Kandos, Molong and Orange, all fierce competitors.
But they were no match for Mudgee Public School, who won the tournament in a clean sweep, which made them the Boys Western Region Softball Champions for 2021.
"We were nervous because Orange has a really strong Saturday comp, but we just took it to them and won," Lachie said.
"I was very surprised, I thought we were gonna get thrashed by them, but 17-5 was a really good result."
The final game brought with it high stakes and debate, just to add to the excitement.
"Our third game there was quite a bit of contention over outs, and there was deliberation between umpires, coaches and scorers over what was actually happening," Megan Cowan, team coach said.
Fast balls and big hits were the highlight of the day for the team, who have now made plans to knuckle down on practice ahead of their next game.
