Up, up and away
Mudgee Airport is currently in the process of undergoing significant upgrades as a result of recent Federal Government funding.
During his visit to Mudgee on May 19, Andrew Gee , paid a visit to the facility to appreciate the work that has already taken place thanks to the $308,000 worth of funding that was provided through the Australian Government's Regional Airports Program.
Mr Gee said the upgrades to the Mudgee Airport are not only a benefit to those who utilise the facility, but will also encourage further economic growth.
"Before this work was carried out, the runway was patchy in places, there were also dips in it. This airport would have had a very limited life had this reseal not occurred," Mr Gee said.
"We know this region is expanding. If we want this area to continue to prosper and offer the unbeatable quality of life it does, we have to make these investments.
"After COVID-19, demand is not only going to increase. People have discovered the regions like never before, we've had the biggest movement of people from the city to the country since the days of the gold rush."
Mid-Western Regional Council deputy mayor, Sam Paine, echoed Mr Gee's thoughts, agreeing that it is encouraging to see the airport at such a high standard in comparison to years prior.
"It's great to have the airport brought up to the best standards it's ever been," Mr Paine said.
"We have more and more people flying into our airport, and more and more people interested in flying to Mudgee. It's excellent for the town to be going into this new era of Mudgee Airport popularity."
A solution for major events?
In addition, the Federal Government will provide more than $1.6 million in funding for a new road from Glen Willow, aimed at cutting travel time significantly during peak events.
"The new road from the Glen Willow south loop toward Putta Bucca will reduce traffic loads on the only existing Glen Willow Complex entrance. The new entrance will allow people travelling from north of Mudgee to access the Complex more easily," Mr Gee said.
"We all know how difficult it can be getting in and out of Glen Willow during major sporting events."
Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Des Kennedy, who was not on site at the announcement, said he is thrilled with the upgrades.
"Pre-construction works have commenced on the Glen Willow south loop road towards Putta Bucca.
"This brand new road will significantly reduce traffic loads during major events and provide a second entrance to the Glen Willow Regional Sports Complex and its car parks. It will greatly improve access and the overall experience for patrons attending events at the stadium."
Funds for new walking paths
The Australian Government has provided provided a total of $725,000 for a new walking path in Mudgee as part of Phase 2 of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.
Of the $725,000, $225,000 has been allocated to the new walking path at Walkers Oval and $500,000 to 25 separate footpath projects in Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos and Rylstone, including Oporto Road in Mudgee.
"The new walking path from the Cudgegong River through the Walkers Oval will mean locals have improved accessibility," Mr Gee said.
"Creating accessible and convenient walking paths is vital for local communities and I know Mudgee residents and visitors alike will make great use of this path.
"Not only is this a scenic walk, this path will create a safe avenue, away from roads, for locals to access."
