The Gulgong Turf Club would have to be one of NSW country racing's best kept secrets, with the little Central Districts club a popular destination for trainers and racing fans alike.
The club relies heavily on word of mouth and their stellar reputation for hosting good race meetings, with no Facebook page or website to boost their status, but still 1000s flock to the town for the annual Gulgong Cup meeting.
Nothing is expected to change on June 13, with the June long weekend giving many punters a good enough reason to take advantage of a good card of racing.
Club Secretary, Diane Thompson said that good, quality racing was their main concern, which is why the meeting was always a big success.
"We always have full fields, and we always have good numbers," Thompson said.
"With the meeting being run on the June long weekend, we expect a big crowd, well that's what we are hoping for this year."
Thompson and her small but hard-working committee are always looking after their jockeys too, meaning there is plenty of interest in races, with hoops venturing from near and far to race at Gulgong.
"We've always had good jockeys. They tell us they like to come to our race meeting because we look after them well," Thompson laughed.
The Gulgong meeting attracts punters and racing fans from all over the region, and Thompson explained that it was a good day out, with plenty on offer both on and off the track. "There are a lot of different people who come for the day out, especially in the Gulgong community itself," Thompson said.
"We also have entertainment for the kids with a jumping castle and those things.
"We have fashions for the men and women, and if any kids line up there, we pick out a boy and girl too.
"There is a canteen and a bar on course and will have music, the TAB van and we usually get somewhere between 10 and 16 bookies and one metro bookie."
Gulgong trainer, Brett Thompson explained that the racecourse was in top notch shape, and suited to all types of horses. "It's a grass track, and nice flat track and I've always had good luck there," Thompson said.
"It's a 300m straight at the most but it's always a good surface and you can win from anywhere."
For race goers considering attending the Gulgong Cup meeting, the local bus service will pick up patrons from all around town, while there is another bus making the trip from Mudgee.
