The WPL season was originally postponed after the completion of 17 rounds, with the final round of the regular season unable to be completed after the competition was abandon last week.

WPL general manager Peter Mitchell said it was a tough call to make and expects that the decision will not suit everyone.

"The Western Premier League will not award major and minor premierships for the 2021 season," Mitchell said.

"The 2021 season will end at round 17. The competition table will remain how it was at the conclusion of round 17.

"The history of the Western Premier League will reflect the standings of the competition at 17 rounds and will include those results.

"In the coming weeks we'll be acknowledging the clubs, the players of the year, the top goal scorers, the competition ladders and sponsors on social media."

Mitchell said Orana Spurs, who were leading the competition with one round remaining, couldn't be awarded the premiership because they could still be caught by Orange Waratahs in the final round.

"The problem is that if we had played the last round, there were two teams that could've claimed the minor premiership," he said.

"We can't play the last round, so we can't say Orana are the premiers or Waratahs are the premiers on assumptions.

"It makes it very, very difficult to award a minor premier. It's been a harrowing week or so, trying to get it sorted."

Mitchell explained the decision was made in consolation with Football NSW development manager for regional football Andrew Fearnley.

Many competitions around the region have awarded titles after their season's were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as Blowes Clothing Cup awarding the overall premiership to the minor premiers and AFL Central West handing out minor premierships only.

Mitchell said he didn't go down that route because unlike Blowes Clothing Cup and AFL Central West, WPL hadn't completed its regular season.

"I looked at the rugby competition and their regular season was completed. I heard AFL canned their competition but awarded the minor premiership," he said.

"But unlike them, the WPL regular season wasn't completed."
