Mid-Western Regional Council has announced Paralympic Gold Medallist and Former World Number 1 Wheelchair Tennis Player David Hall, OAM is the Mid-Western Region’s 2019 Australia Day Ambassador.
A former professional athlete, David consistently ranked Number 1 in the world for Singles competition and his 19 Super Series Singles Titles (equivalent to the able-bodied Grand Slam) are the most recorded by any player on the international tour.
At the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, David won gold in the Men’s Singles Competition, the first Australian to achieve such success, and silver in the Doubles Competition. He spearheaded Australia’s victory at the 2002 World Team Cup (equivalent the Davis Cup) where Australia defeated the USA in the Final.
David retired from the tour at the end of the 2005 season and is now the Optus National Wheelchair Tennis Advisor for Tennis Australia.
David said he is excited to visit the region and join in the celebrations.
“Australia Day is one my favourite days of the year, I'm just very thankful that we live in a country where we have the freedom to make our own choices, in a lot of ways it's a day to reflect on our past and think about our future but more importantly it’s to embrace our community spirit, which I'm sure is very strong in the Mudgee region,” David said.
“I'm really looking forward to spending time out there, meeting the locals, having a lamington or two and celebrating the day with everybody.”
