The Mudgee Historical Society is the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the NSW Government's Community Building Partnerships program.
Which will be used to build an accessible toilet at the museum, to complement the male and female toilets already on site.
"The museum really is a gem of the Mudgee tourist trail, and given the number of visiting bus groups they normally have with people of varying ages and abilities, this type of accessible toilet is a must," Dugald Saunders, member for the Dubbo electorate, said.
"Under the current restrictions due to COVID-19 the museum is not operating [see below], but I'm hoping this project will start soon, and can be up and running by the time visitors are welcomed back.
"Providing grants like this is one of the ways I'm hoping to boost our regional communities and give local groups something to look forward to while our lives are being impacted in so many ways at the moment."
President of the Mudgee Historical Society, Barry Wells, said the grant is an important step forward for the museum.
"This new accessible toilet will make things a lot easier for many of our visitors, which includes quite a few seniors' bus groups and also people from the nursing homes," he said.
"The project has all been approved, we have a DA done with council, and we are now all ready to go with the builders."
Applications for the 2020 Community Building Partnerships program will open in May, and more information can be obtained by visiting nsw.gov.au/cbp
What's happening while the museum is closed
Mudgee's Colonial Inn Museum has temporarily closed with plans to review the situation on April 21.
It is still possible to request family history research to be conducted for you, with the research team able to access to many resources at home. But self research using the museum's resources is not available until reopening.
This also meant that the Seniors' Morning Tea planned for March 31 had to been cancelled, although it will be rescheduled when possible.
There will also be a freeze on orders for books. If you have already been in touch, your order will be processed, but no new orders will be sent.
