John William Wood, of Angus Avenue, Kandos, appeared in Rylstone Local Court on Friday, June 5, 2020, on three counts of 'Dishonestly obtain property by deception'.
The 66-year-old would drive the victim to various errands and appointments in Mudgee and Bathurst. And due to the victim's poor memory, he knew his banking PIN.
In February, following one of the trips, the victim had left his wallet in Wood's car. He took the bank card and - using internet banking - began moving thousands of dollars at a time, from one of the victim's accounts to the one that could be accessed with the card.
Between February 28 and March 24, Wood took a total of $7,300 in ATM withdrawals and spent a total of $1,135.78 via EFTPOS. After his account had been depleted, the victim reported the card missing and contacted police who began their investigation.
Wood was seen using the card on CCTV on multiple dates, at clubs in Mudgee, Rylstone and Kandos, as well as at a bottle-shop and an ATM. On Friday, April 3, 2020, the bank contacted police when Wood arrived at the branch, with the victim, in order to replace the old card.
Initially he told them that he'd never accessed accounts and didn't know the victim's PIN. He was arrested and during further questioning, admitted to making 26 withdrawals during the period.
And he said that while some of it was used to service his car, the majority was used for gambling. The victim - who doesn't own a phone and wasn't capable of using internet banking - lost a total of $8,435.78.
